As electronic cigarettes, or “ecigs”, continue to rise in popularity, there is a natural opposition from the tobacco and health industry to attempt to impose tighter regulations on the industry. The big tobacco companies want you to believe that ecigs are a fleeting trend that will disappear overnight.
The good news is that they couldn’t be more wrong. As smokers and non-smokers alike continue to see the many benefits of ecigs, the industry grows stronger and the facts begin to wash out the baseless nonsense of those who oppose vaping. Here are three reasons ecigs will be a part of our culture for a long, long time to come:
Don’t believe the anti-hype. The UK seems to be leading the charge in the fight for ecig freedom, and a recent independent study from Public Health England has found that ecigs are about 95% less harmful than traditional cigarettes. Over 8.6 million people in the U.S. alone have a serious illness that is directly related to smoking, so these findings should make it clear to current smokers that ecigs are definitively safer than cigarettes. The smoking cessation benefits that ecigs offer are invaluable. In a Belgian study, 44% of participants either severely reduced or completely eliminated their smoking habit after eight months by replacing cigarettes with ecigs. As they say, the proof is in the pudding, and ecigs do a lot more help than they do harm.
Easy to use. Besides just helping you quit smoking, ecigs are extremely simple to use and require no lighter or matches, saving you money and possible fire damage. 1,000 Americans are killed every year from smoking-related fires, and ecigs completely remove the possibility for these incidents. You simply buy a starter kit, choose your favorite flavor, load your eliquid, and you’re ready to go.
Endless amount of flavors. Maybe the most exciting aspect of ecigs is they allow for endless customization. Cigarettes only have two flavors (tobacco and menthol) while ecigs have literally tens of thousands already, with more being developed every day. According to a survey of ecig users, about 31% prefer fruit flavors, with tobacco coming in at 22% and dessert-flavored options close behind at 19%.
The next time someone tries to tell you that ecigs are just a flash in the pan, point them to the dozens of studies and articles that explain the benefits of ecigs over traditional cigarettes. If they smoke traditional cigarettes, you could be doing more than informing them; you could be saving their life.
